Born from the collaboration between the famous winery Banfi, the Rubei family of the Alexanderplatz in Rome and the Municipality of Montalcino, for the twenty-second consecutive year, the festival brings world-renowned artists to the city that is a symbol of Brunello.

It begins Tuesday July 2nd, within the historic walls of Castello Banfi, with “Awaiting Jazz & Wine” and the unmistakable sounds of SEBASTIEN CHAUMONT 5et. The French saxophonist and singer with his quintet will take the audience back to when jazz and blues made people dance. A journey through emotions from the swing and pre-bop atmospheres of the 40s, all the way to the sound of early rhythm ‘n’ blues and jive of the 50s.

Tuesday, July 9th, again at Castello Banfi, the festival enters the heart of its key week, with an all stars band led by the established Mexican composer, drummer, and singer ISRAEL VARELA.

With The Labyrinth Project. Varela – who has previously worked alongside Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny – will perform together with the virtuoso German pianist FLORIAN WEBER and the legendary Brazilian bassist (four-time Grammy Award Winner) ALFREDO PAIXAO. Special guest the great American saxophonist BEN WENDEL.

Unmissable appointment of Wednesday, July 10 with the JAZZ & WINE ORCHESTRA led by Mario Corvini who, as every year, opens the concerts at the Fortezza di Montalcino. This year, the evening’s guest is Rosario Giuliani, a multi-award-winning Italian saxophonist and longtime “friend” of Jazz & Wine.

The resident orchestra, present at the Montalcino festival since 2015, this year offers a repertoire dedicated to Thelonious Monk, a model and reference for generations of musicians due to his eclectic, original, and always unconventional approach.

Thursday, July 11 the Philadelphia virtuoso takes the stage KURT ROSENWINKEL. The guitarist dominated the New York jazz scene for over a decade creating a new thing in jazz born from contaminations with rock, hip hop, and contemporary music. Gifted with a strongly romantic compositional vein and an absolutely personal tone of rare beauty, in this trio he is supported by the talent and class of drummer Greg Hutchinson and Salerno bassist Dario Deidda, always alongside Kurt in recent years, also during his performances in the United States.

Highlight of this edition, Friday, July 12 arrives DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER with J’ai deux amours. Absolute star of the global music scene, undisputed lady of jazz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, with this project, pays tribute to the career and life of Josephine Baker and also celebrates famous chansonniers of the time such as Edith Piaf and Charles Trenet.

For the occasion, Dee Dee Bridgewater appears with a superb quartet made up of Ira Coleman (bass), Louis Winsberg (guitar), Marc Berthoumieux (accordion), and Minino Garay (percussion).

Saturday, July 13 the festival celebrates Italian jazz with drummer ROBERTO GATTO and his New Quartet. Representative of Italian jazz in the world, also proclaimed this year as the best Italian drummer by the Jazzit monthly magazine, with this new project, extraordinarily mature and expressive, Gatto returns to a purely acoustic dimension, thanks to the support of three stage companions who best represent the Italian jazz scene: Alessandro Lanzoni on piano, Matteo Bortone on double bass and Alessandro Presti on trumpet.

The twenty-second edition concludes Sunday, July 14 with two more icons of jazz: FLAVIO BOLTRO BBB TRIO ft STEFANO DI BATTISTA. The reunion of the two ambassadors of Italian jazz worldwide, born this winter at Alexanderplatz in Rome, offers a concert ranging from acoustic to the use of electronic effects. The repertoire includes pieces that refer to pop with atmospheres different from classic jazz, in which Stefano’s sound fits perfectly, warm and sharp more than ever. Also on stage are Mauro Battisti on bass and Mattia Barbieri on drums.

All shows of Jazz & Wine in Montalcino will start at 9:45 PM.
