Terra Madre Salone del Gusto, the most important international event dedicated to good food, arrives at Lingotto Fiera in Turin from October 8 to 12, 2020.
Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2020
For the 2020 edition Slow Food, proposes a new geography focusing on ecosystems, with their fragilities and the concrete possible solutions that the network is already experimenting with from one corner of the world to another. In this historical phase where nationalism is re-emerging and walls and barbed wires are appearing again, Terra Madre Salone del Gusto presents a new approach to its biennial event and organizes the space and visit routes into homogeneous territories, putting political borders in the background to privilege physical, ecological, and cultural elements.
No longer the classic division among exhibitors of the Italian and international Market (and within it by single regions and countries), but a visiting route that will guide the public to explore a new food geography:
- mountain and hilly areas, with their products and projects for the care of the territory
- coastal communities and inland waters, engaged in protecting seas, rivers, lakes, sustainable fishing, and fighting pollution
- urban fabric and its relationship with the countryside through gardens, farmers’ markets and purchase groups
- plains, where agroecology is proposed as a system to counter monocultures, desertification, and deforestation.
The four areas will bring together delegates and exhibitors from the Alps to the Andes, from the North Seas to the great European rivers, from emerging Slow Food villages to creative cities, from the Po Valley to the African savanna.
The debate and exchange among delegates during the event will be enriched by the issues that Slow Food will bring up for discussion within the framework of its VIII International Congress which will be held right in Turin on the same days as Terra Madre Salone del Gusto.
And it is precisely with this last appointment in mind that in these days the opening document of the congress path will be sent to the entire Slow Food network worldwide: a true call to action for members, activists, leaders, volunteers from every corner of the Planet.
“The greatest strength of an event like Terra Madre Salone del Gusto is its authenticity,” emphasizes the president of the Piemonte Region, Alberto Cirio. “A value that we are called to promote and safeguard as the key to the future not only of agriculture but in general of the life of our towns. That very authenticity which you breathe as you cross the entrance of an event of which we are deeply proud and capable of bringing the entire world under the sky of Piemonte.”

“Terra Madre Salone del Gusto is a material and immaterial heritage of the City of Turin of which we can only be proud. The eno-gastronomic excellence that has always characterized our City, in fact, is just one of the points of contact with this internationally significant event. What will increasingly make the difference are indeed the values of sustainability, social justice, equity that, precisely in food – in its production, processing, distribution, consumption – can find their highest expression. I am certain that, once again, Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will be an extraordinary moment of discovery and reflection for the entire community,” affirms Chiara Appendino, mayor of the City of Turin.
“Food has a central role in the environmental and climate crisis we are experiencing. The model of agri-food production, distribution and consumption that we choose can be the turning point to respond to the great challenge of implementing change within the next 10 years, as the United Nations first remind us. In this context, building the future of food together means building the future of the Planet together. For this reason, the next edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will be an extraordinary event, perhaps the most important of all those celebrated so far,” declares Paolo Di Croce, Secretary General of Slow Food.
The largest international event dedicated to good, clean and fair food, the environment and food policies, organized by Slow Food, Piemonte Region e City of Turin, will present itself to visitors with a new look, revolutionizing the visiting experience and the opportunities to meet those who every day work to change the future of food. A future we can write together and for which Slow Food is already calling to action the producers in its network together with experts and academics, chefs, youth and all visitors so that they may contribute with ideas and proposals, projects and energy.
