Choosing a Cantaloupe

When buying a melon, there are some tips to ensure a ripe and sweet cantaloupe. The skin should be free of cracks and discoloration areas, and there should be no color seepage through the stem or white skin under the stem. A cantaloupe heavy for its size means it contains a high amount of water and sugar, which means it is sweet and juicy. The “thump test” is another good indication of a ripe melon: when you tap the cantaloupe it should sound hollow. Finally, the cantaloupe should have a fresh and fruity aroma.
