The Makowiec is made with poppy seeds and, according to Polish tradition, they represent a sign of abundance and fertility and are therefore a symbol of good luck. To ensure you have some every day, prepare Makowiec throughout the year, to enjoy in the morning with a hot tea or coffee.

The Makowiec is made with poppy seeds and, according to Polish tradition, they represent a sign of abundance and fertility and therefore are a symbol of good luck.

Attrezzature

Ingredients

Filling ingredients

  • 125 gr poppy seeds
  • 20 gr walnut halves
  • 30 gr raisins
  • 30 gr candied orange in cubes
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 pcs eggs
  • 200 gr powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vodka

Dough ingredients

  • 200 gr plain flour
  • 3 pcs eggs yolk
  • 10 gr yeast
  • 40 gr powdered sugar
  • 100 ml milk
  • 55 gr butter
  • 1 packet vanillin

Instructions

Dough preparation

  • Dissolve the yeast in 25 ml of warm milk, a teaspoon of sugar, and a tablespoon of flour.
  • Cover and let rise for 15 minutes in a warm place.
  • Then, beat the egg yolks with sugar to obtain a creamy mixture.
  • Add vanillin, flour, 75 ml of warm milk, yeast, and melted butter (cooled).
  • Once a smooth, elastic dough forms, cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for a couple of hours.

Filling preparation

  • Meanwhile, prepare the filling: first, put the poppy seeds in a bowl covered with boiling water and let them sit under a lid for half an hour.
  • After draining and squeezing, blend them and add crushed walnuts, raisins, candied orange cubes, melted and cooled butter, and vodka.
  • Beat the egg yolks with the powdered sugar and separately whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  • Then combine everything to make the filling.

Assembly

  • Roll out the risen dough, then cover with the filling, leaving a border of a couple of centimeters.
  • Roll up and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, with the seam facing down.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake in preheated oven at 180°C for 45 minutes.
  • Decorate to taste with candied fruits, sugar glaze, and poppy seeds.
