Broccoli are members of the cruciferous family, with well-known “cousins” such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, along with lesser-known “cousins” including Chinese cabbage and pak-choi. Broccoli are considered among the most nutritious vegetables because they are rich in numerous vitamins and minerals that help fight cancer, build strong bones, and lower cholesterol.

This superfood is rich in fiber, cancer-fighting antioxidants, and vitamin C which promotes iron absorption. Although broccoli does not provide as much calcium as a glass of milk, it is still a great source. They help control blood pressure and build strong bones. Try to eat broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts) several times a week to reap the benefits for yourself.

What do broccoli contain?

Firstly, broccoli are rich in nutrients and also have few calories, so we can say that “broccoli are a low-calorie and nutrient-rich food.” They have nutrients similar to many healthy green vegetables. They are rich in nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, selenium, and vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, along with B vitamins like folate (folic acid), vitamin B6, antioxidants such as lutein and other carotenoids, and are also a great source of fiber.

Broccoli are also a sulfur-containing vegetable with compounds called glucosinolates and other sulfur-containing compounds. It has been discovered that these produce many bioactive compounds with interesting and potentially health-promoting properties. Some of these bioactive compounds include things called indoles, isothiocyanates, and sulforaphane. Compounds that have been increasingly researched to investigate their potential healing properties.

The benefits of broccoli

Research has found associations between broccoli (and other brassicas) consumption and a reduced risk of the onset of certain chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, cataracts, and other age-related conditions.

Anti-carcinogenic

Although cancer development is a complex process, regular consumption of broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables has been associated in epidemiological studies with reduced risks for certain cancer types, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, etc..

Detoxification and estrogen balance

Detoxification has become a “buzzword” with detox smoothies, detox teas, detox fasting, etc. Among the bioactive compounds studied from broccoli are isothiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, and sulforaphane, which can positively influence the physiological phases of detoxification, a process that mainly occurs in the liver.

Estrogen metabolism.

When estrogen is metabolized by the body, there are healthier ways it can be processed or less healthy, more pro-carcinogenic ways, harmful to DNA and oxidative damage. And yes, men also have estrogen, especially if men carry more fat, since fat cell molecules can convert testosterone into estrogen. The good news is that research has found that these bioactive compounds, such as isothiocyanates and indole-3-carbinols, help support healthier pathways in estrogen removal and therefore can potentially help reduce the risk of damage from unhealthy compounds.

Antioxidant protection

Broccoli, as we have seen in the nutrients, contain antioxidants that act directly against these harmful molecules, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and other carotenoids, along with the minerals zinc and selenium that help support our own powerful “endogenous” antioxidants. Research has shown promising results in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases suspected to be through the combination of nutrients in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. A recent population study observed correlations

Are broccoli really a superfood?

Research has suggested that broccoli has a different and perhaps greater health potential compared to other leafy green vegetables such as spinach and lettuce, and also other vegetables like carrots. There is a growing amount of evidence suggesting that there is a potential risk reduction benefit to help protect against certain types of cancer, support detoxification and estrogen balance, along with other potential benefits for our cardiovascular health and an overall contributing effect for healthy weight management.
